Cost
How much does it cost to hire an AI consultant for a small business?
It depends on scope, and we will not pretend otherwise. Every engagement starts with a fixed-price AI ROI Assessment, then a plain-English plan that quotes the build before any work begins. You know the number before you commit. We do not bill open-ended monthly retainers to implement our own recommendations.
Do you charge a monthly retainer?
Not for project work. Fee-for-service engagements are scoped with a fixed price. Ongoing support exists only when it genuinely makes sense, and our equity-based growth partnerships are a separate, by-invitation model.
Timeline and ROI
How long does AI integration take?
Most builds run two to six weeks. The full path is a three to five day AI ROI Assessment, about a week to agree the plan, two to six weeks to build, and about a week to hand off and train your team.
Is AI worth it for a 20-person company?
Sometimes. AI pays when it removes repetitive, high-frequency work: intake, scheduling, follow-ups, reporting. If your team does the same task dozens of times a week, there is usually a return. If there is not, we tell you. The assessment exists to answer this honestly before you spend on a build.
How do you measure the ROI of an AI project?
In hours saved and revenue kept, not in features shipped. We agree on the metric up front, hours per week reclaimed, faster intake, fewer errors, and build toward it.
Choosing a consultant
What should I ask an AI consultant before hiring one?
Ask who actually builds it. At Next Wave Harbor the person who scopes your project is the person building it. Ask whether you own everything at the end. Ask what happens if it does not work. Ask for the plan in plain English, not a 60-page deck.
What are the red flags when hiring an AI consultant?
Strategy-only retainers, proprietary black boxes you cannot leave, vendor lock-in, vague ROI promises, and pressure to sign a large contract fast. We document everything, train your team, and aim to make ourselves unnecessary.
Who will I actually be working with?

What can an AI consultant actually do for my small business?

Where should I start?
With the AI ROI Assessment. We spend a few days inside how your business runs and come back with a short list: where AI pays, what it costs, what it returns, and what to skip. You keep that list whether or not we build anything together.
Can I just use ChatGPT myself instead of hiring someone?
For some things, yes, and we will say so. ChatGPT is a tool; a working system is integrations, data, and automation built into your operations and maintained over time. We build the system when the tool alone is not enough.

Do you just advise, or do you build it?
We build it. Most firms hand you a strategy deck. We hand you a working product your team can run without us.
Should I build AI in-house or hire a consultant?
A sensible path is to hire to build and validate the first version, then decide what to keep in-house. An external team is faster to a working result; an internal capability makes sense once you have proven automations and a backlog that justifies it.
